Individual Art Therapy Sessions

Individual art therapy, also known as one-to-one work, usually takes place once a week at the same time. Referrals are accepted from Organisations such as schools, hospitals and care homes.

Group Art Therapy Sessions

Art therapy groups are a helpful way to explore personal and group themes. In a supportive, non-judgmental and confidential space, participants can paint and reflect together. Group work is 1.5 hours. (90 Minutes) It is possible to try a session to see if you like it. Recommended Schedule: A commitment to weekly or bi-weekly sessions is encouraged to maintain the continuity and focus of the work.

Online Individual Art Therapy

Realizing one’s own potential. Relaxation and self-inquiry/self-confrontation. Get to know your feeling self intimately. Give yourself space to be. Take an active, rather than passive, approach to solving problems. 

No Art Experience Necessary

No experience of art is required, and no special artistic ability; there is no right way of doing it. This is also good for people who find it difficult to express their thoughts and feelings verbally. Safely use the media  in any way you would like.

An opportunity to find out about yourself

You can use the Art therapy sessions to explore your options. You are your best expert.  I do not give advice in sessions to clients or give advice to professionals in your care. I will feed back to multidisciplinary meetings about the attendance of sessions and how the sessions were used. You will not be “told off” or told that your art is “wrong”. You can come to therapy with any worries or difficulties and you can talk about them or make something. You will be treated with dignity and respect. I do not administer medication or give advice on medication of any kind. I will listen to you in a private and confidential setting, offering you my full attention and respect. 

You reveal what you want

Art made by the client can often give clues as to what is happening in that person’s life. But ultimately, the client knows how they are really feeling. When the person is ready to talk about things in the sessions, the therapist will be there to listen.

Confidentiality

I do not tell people that you attend any Art Therapy session or art group. Your G.P. or your health professional will have to be notified. You can tell anyone you attend, if you wish.  Confidentiality is not absolute and there are circumstances in which information can or must be released.

Endings

Art Therapy will end when you think that enough has been achieved for now or when you have reached the end of the agreed maximum number of sessions. Endings can bring up a variety of feelings within you. Ending therapy can be explored using art-making. Your care providers will be notified of your Art Therapy sessions ending.

Benefits of Art Therapy

Anyone can be creative in some form or another. By using art, you see things about yourself that you otherwise may not have seen. It can aid you to process the unseen and therefore heal yourself. It is not a quick fix! Art can help to reduce pain, anxiety, and tension in your life. Art can help people with their social skills, shy people can express themselves. Angry people can explore themselves. Art encourages self-discovery and emotional growth. You do not have to talk all the time to benefit from Art Therapy.

Therapy with other Therapists

If you are in therapy with another therapist, please let me know. We all work differently and it is best that you either continue with your original therapist, or, start a new relationship with me. It is not advisable to have therapy with too many therapists.

Need a Home Visit?

I am based in the Royal borough of Greenwich, London. If you find it hard to get around, would a home visit help?

Payment

Payment for Art Therapy must be made on the day of service. Skype or online Art Therapy is paid for before the session begins. I accept cash, and PayPal © No cheques please. You are WHOLLY RESPONSIBLE for paying for your sessions, irrespective of if you are being funded/sponsored/loaned or paying from your own finances

New venues 

I will be facilitating Art Therapy from a venue in Plumstead. It has easy access to transport and parking. It is near schools, nurseries and after school clubs. There are amenities such as shops, and doctor’s surgery very close to the venue.

Attendance and Timekeeping

Attendance and timekeeping are important to us. Please let me know if you are unable to attend in good time. You will be charged for the session otherwise. If you arrive late, you will be charged for the full session. I have a page dedicated to attendance 

Storing of, removal and discarding of art work

I follow The British Association of Art Therapist (BAAT) guidelines for the timescale of keeping notes and art work.  All record keeping and art work is stored confidentially and secure.  This is within requirements of the Data Protection Act (1998).  I also follow The British Association of Art Therapist (BAAT) guidelines for the timescale of keeping notes and art work.

The key to a happy life is taking responsibility to make it.

Art Therapy takes place in a room with art materials and an Art Therapist. It is about using the art materials with an Art Therapist to show yourself and other people how you are feeling. This can let other people understand and help you and allow you to help yourself.

The relationship between the therapist and the client is of central importance, but art therapy differs from other talking therapies in that it is a three way process between the client, the therapist and the image or construction. It offers a way to express and communicate for people who find it hard to express their thoughts and feelings in words.

What do I do in Art Therapy?

You are given time with art materials to make things, play and talk.

Why do people see an Art Therapist?

Sometimes changes in their lives at home, school, with family and friends make some people behave differently, or have very strong feelings about. It may be hard to talk and think about how you feel.

What kind of things do Art Therapists help people with?

Some reasons a person sees an art therapist may be:

To help you think about how you look and feel about yourself

To feel more confident in yourself

To explore changes and bad experiences in your life from the past and put them behind you

To understand why you do things that you don’t want to do

To have a stable and understanding place to go when things in life seem very unsafe or changeable

How can Art Therapy help me?

Art therapy encourages you to express yourself and communicate how they feel. This helps them gain increased self awareness, understanding and self esteem.

Art Therapy can be another way to express things.

Do I have to be good at Art?

Art therapy is not about being good at art but being willing to use the materials to express yourself with art materials. Art Therapy aims to help people make change and grow on a personal level through the use of art materials in a safe environment.

When and where will I see the Art Therapist?

You will see the same art therapist on each Appointment. You will work in a quiet room at your local centre.

Who knows that I am doing Art Therapy? (Confidentiality)

Art Therapy is private within the health team unless you or someone you know is unsafe and have been or are at risk of being hurt. We will talk to you about this when we meet. While you do Art Therapy your work will be kept in a safe place and is looked after by the Art Therapist.

When you have finished working with an Art Therapist you can keep your Art work or it can be stored for up to 3 years at the centre after this is will be safely disposed of.

The person who has referred you and your G.P., parents or carers will know you have been offered Art Therapy.

Your Art Therapist will have supervision with another professional in their team, to make sure that they are helping you in the best way they can. If other professionals work with you we may all meet to make sure we are all working together to help you and your family.

You can tell people you are doing Art Therapy if you want to.

What happens if I don’t like Art Therapy?

If you are not happy with Art Therapy we want you to talk to us about this. If you have questions about Art Therapy please feel free to ask your Art Therapist.

Art Therapy can be extremely uncomfortable at times, even painful, but it is so important to keep up your attendance and punctuality and work through it.
